ShareWay IP Professional Edition
User's Guide
Introduction
ShareWay IP Professional Edition, from Open Door Networks Inc., brings
TCP/IP accessibility to any AppleShare-compatible (AFP) server. With ShareWay
IP, regardless of whether you're running Apple's personal file sharing,
AppleShare, or an AFP server on a non-Macintosh OS, you can make those servers
available over your organization's intranet, or over the Internet itself.
The Professional Edition is the most advanced of three editions:
- ShareWay IP Personal Edition is for use with the Mac OS's built-in
personal file sharing.
- ShareWay IP Standard Edition can target any single AFP (AppleTalk Filing
Protocol) server.
- ShareWay IP Professional Edition can target multiple servers from a
single Macintosh, providing efficient resource utilization and allowing
centralized administration of IP access to AFP servers. It is also useful
on a single server whenever advanced management features are desired.
By enabling TCP/IP access to AFP servers, ShareWay IP Gateway
makes it possible to:
- Make AppleShare servers or Apple's personal file sharing on any Macintosh
accessible from anywhere on your intranet -- even from sections not running
AppleTalk -- or over the Internet.
- Make non-Macintosh AFP services, such as those on Windows NT, Novell
Netware or Unix accessible from anywhere on your intranet, or over the
Internet.
- Begin to turn off the AppleTalk protocol on your intranet without losing
the benefits of traditional AppleTalk services.
ShareWay IP Professional provides the above functionality, for multiple
AFP servers, from a single Macintosh, while additionally including a number
of advanced management features which aid in the administration and monitoring
of those servers.
Which Edition?
- If you want to provide centralized IP accessibility for a number
of AFP servers from a single Macintosh and you have AppleTalk connectivity
to those AFP servers, you should use the Professional Edition.
- Advanced management features are also only available in the
Professional Edition. If you want features like real-time statistics, graphing
and logging of server access, you need the Professional Edition.
- If you only use the Mac OS's built-in personal file sharing
on your network, you probably want to use the Personal Edition, although
in some situations the Professional Edition may be more appropriate.
- If you are going to be supporting AFP servers on non-Macintosh platforms
such as Windows NT or Unix, you should probably use the Professional
Edition.
The choice of which edition to use for your specific situation is discussed in depth
at Open Door's Web site.
